Shanghai - first day. Today we visited the Bund, which is the old financial centre of Shanghai. We did a river cruise - during which I took many of these pictures. On one side there was this ultramodern cityscape of skyscrapers and on the other these majestic Victorian neo-classical buildings. After we got off the boat we witnessed the aftermath of the thunder storm that we had witnessed during our boat ride. Aftermath = massive downpour.

This afternoon I along with the other foreign public school teachers and our Korean co-teachers went to a ceremony entitled: "Declaration Ceremony of the Free English Zone". This was supposed to be a public declaration with an address from the Mayor of Incheon and a number of other dignitaries naming Incheon as a city which has a commitment to English as it wants to become an international city, which on propaganda videos they call the "economic hub" of Asia. They had videos and speeches which were all (save the mayor's address) in Korean and I finally managed to leave after 1 1/2 hours of being completely bored out of my tree as I couldn't understand a thing (except for "Yongo" - the Korean word for English)... Hmmm, kind of defeats the purpose but I guess it's the thought that counts.
